This book was written to memorialize the details of my grandmother’s survival of the Holocaust for our children and all future generations to read and understand. We must never forget so that it never happens again.
Mother of Souls The Story of a Holocaust Survivor eBook Adena Astrowsky Joanna Kolodney
I read this a couple of weeks ago and am still processing it. I have always been interested in reading about WW2, and about the Holocaust in particular. Although most novels about this period are based - some more than others - on actual events, in the end they are fictionalized accounts. Not so this book. Starkly told, it is the story of one remarkable woman's unimaginably horrific journey through the rise of the Nazi regime, the war, and the aftermath. There are sections written, in prose or poetry, by Mania. Details, such as the dying man giving his ration of water to the children that they might live, are hard to forget. Mania went on to rebuild a new life in a new country, with a new language and new customs, always carrying with her the losses of her family and memories of the brutality she witnessed and lived through. She is the truest kind of hero. The most important reason to read this book, though, is to remind us to remain ever vigilant about the possibility that history can indeed repeat itself. Germany in the 1930's was not an uncivilized country, and yet Hitler and his party acquired such power that the mass extermination of millions of human beings became a reality. It could happen again if we allow ourselves to forget.

loved it
Thank you for documenting this important part of your family history. What an incredible story of survival... and death. Remembering this ugly chapter in human history is especially important at this time in our history.
A personalized account of one survivor. It was nice to see letters and poems written by Mania included in her account written by her granddaughters.
What a great book and well told story. Love how personal it is. It made it even more special knowing the family.
I read this book yesterday afternoon and it was so moving. Your grandmother possessed an incredible strength and resilience living through such a dark and tragic time. It's absolutely horrifying what so many endured. Thank you for sharing her story. ❤
